  39. The Digital Video Tape format is quite real, and becoming more and more 
  40. available. Sony has two camcorders on the market, and Panasonic has at 
  41. least one. They actually lay the signal on the tape as a digital stream.

  43. Decks are still several months away. You're correct in attributing part 
  44. of the delay to issues of copy protection. It seems that there will be a 
  45. form of Serial Copy Management, or whatever it's called, so that digital 
  46. copies of once-copied, copy protected material can't be made. What that 
  47. means is that you can make a digital copy of an original, copy protected 
  48. work, but can't make a copy of a copy.

  50. This shouldn't be a problem for editing self-aquired material, but you 
  51. can imagine the problems of protecting original works.

  53. The only problem at this point is with availability. The Sony 3-chip 
  54. camcorder is in very short supply, but the single chip camcorder should 
  55. be more readily available.

  57. Sony as well as others have an IEEE standard for networking and 
  58. transmission of digital video information. At Comdex, Sony showed a 
  59. system that had a prototype PCI board for editing images and sequences 
  60. directly from the camcorder or deck. I even heard rumors that Newtek was 
  61. looking at the standard for inclusion in their Flyer system (note, rumor 
  62. only).

  64. It doesn't seem to me to be premature in starting to aquire digital 
  65. footage. The quality is outstanding and far exceeds any consumer or 
  66. pro-sumer products on the market. The format is a standard one.
